How it works
Takt time is the pace at which one part must be finished to meet customer demand. Cycle time, by contrast, is how long the process actually takes per part. If the bottleneck cycle time exceeds takt time (a ratio above 100%), the line cannot meet demand.
Formula
Takt = (Tavail × shifts) / demand Stations = ⌈work content / takt⌉ Capacity = (Tavail × shifts) / CTbottleneck
Dividing total work content by takt time gives the minimum number of balanced stations or operators. In practice, plan cycle times at about 85–95% of takt time to leave a buffer for small disruptions.
